The Institute of Ecosystem Research of Kiel University is seeking a PhD
student for a three-year full-time position in Marine Biology within the
research project titled, "The Changing Arctic Transpolar System (CATS)."

Application deadline: Friday, 31 March 2017.

The CATS project is a multidisciplinary German-Russian research
initiative studying the oceanography and ecology of the transpolar
system of the Arctic Ocean under past, present, and future climate
conditions. Within this framework, the work focuses on the study of the
spatial patterns of marine benthic biodiversity of Eurasian Arctic shelf
seas.

The successful candidate is expected to perform model-based
investigations using existing distribution data sets and closely
cooperate with project partners from multiple institutions.

Candidates must hold a university degree (M.S. or diploma) in marine
biology, biological oceanography, geography, or related subject.
Experience in benthic diversity studies and analysis of large data sets
is desired. Strong collaboration with other PhD and Postdoctoral
projects in the institute, as well as fluency in written and spoken
English, is expected.

Applications must include a cover letter outlining and detailing the
motivation for application and research interests, a curriculum vitae,
copies of credentials, and two letters of support. Materials must be
submitted via email as one PDF file or by postal mail.

    Bergen, Norway

This three-year PhD project will combine in situ and satellite
observations with model developments to address the cross-disciplinary
research between physical oceanography, sea ice, climate dynamics, and
glaciology mapping and understanding processes, links, and feedbacks
influenced by a changing climate.

Application deadline: 4 April 2017.

The successful candidate will have interest and experience in physical
oceanography, sea ice, climate dynamics, and glaciology, in particular
in the Arctic and subarctic; experience in the analysis and
interpretation of data sets; numerical modeling and/or statistical
inference techniques; and strong programming skills.

Applications must include:

  • A two-page project description highlighting the background of the
    research ideas, the hypotheses of the research ideas, research plan, and
    publication plan;
  • A one-page letter of motivation;
