  1. PhD Researcher
    Biological Science
University of Windsor or University of Manitoba
Windsor, Ontario or Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

The University of Windsor and University of Manitoba are seeking
candidates for a PhD position in biology. This graduate student position
will be located in Canada at the University of Windsor in Windsor,
Ontario or the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

This project will focus on spatial aspects of the Beaufort Sea food web.
Beluga whales are important predators in the Beaufort Sea food web and
are important to the Inuvialuit of the western Arctic. While several
studies have examined these food webs using stable isotopes and fatty
acids, the spatial dynamics of prey and predator interactions are poorly
understood. Using telemetry techniques, including acoustic tagging of
fish prey species, this project will aim to quantify spatial and
temporal predator-prey interactions and how these seasonally structure
the Beaufort food web. The overall objective is to advance static food
web models for the region through developing an integrated approach to
facilitate a flexible food web framework. Laboratory analysis and
spatial habitat modelling will form key components of the study, in
addition to field telemetry techniques.

The successful candidate should have a Master's degree, a quantitative
background and knowledge in spatial analysis, and broad ecological
theorem, as well as field work experience with fish and/or marine
mammals. Fieldwork will be required during the summer of 2017.

Applications must include a curriculum vitae and a letter of interest.

To apply, submit applications via email to Lisa Loseto
(Lisa.Loseto [at] dfo-mpo.gc.ca) or Nigel Hussey (NeHussey [at] uwindsor.ca).

  1. Postdoctoral Researcher
    Data Assimilation
Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center
    Bergen, Norway

The Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC) seeks
candidates for the position of postdoctoral researcher in data
assimilation. This three-year position will be within NERSC's data
assimilation group and will be located in Bergen, Norway.

The primary focus of this position will be the development of novel data
assimilation methods for numerical models using a time-varying
Lagrangian mesh. The work is driven by the interest of application with
a Lagrangian state-of-the-art sea ice model developed in-house at NERSC.
This successful candidate will work on the mathematical and
computational dimensions of the problem, while also using knowledge of
sea ice physics.

Research in this position will be done in collaboration with the sea-ice
modeling group at NERSC. The successful candidate will have the
opportunity to travel on extended visits to international collaborators
and to attend relevant meetings.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in applied mathematics or
physics with a strong background in statistics, probability, and/or
dynamical systems. Programming skills, in both Matlab and Python, are
required. A strong background in geophysical data assimilation is
preferred.

Applications must include:

  • A curriculum vitae with a publication list,
  • A letter of motivation describing applicant's research to-date and
    interest in position, and
  • Contact information for at least two references.

Application materials should be submitted via email with the subject
line, "Application for REDDA postdoc" to admin [at] nersc.no and copied to
alberto.carrassi [at] nersc.no and laurent.bertino [at] nersc.no.

Application deadline: 15 April 2017.
