  1. PhD Position Available
    Engineering and Environment
    Northumbria University
    Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom

The faculty of Engineering and Environment at Northumbria University
announce a call for applications for a PhD position for a project on
snow-albedo climate feedbacks in boreal forests. This three-year
position will begin 2 October 2017 and be based at Northumbria
University in Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom.

The successful candidate will utilize a suite of geospatial data to
quantify the influence of boreal forest structure on variability of the
snow-albedo feedback (SAF) in boreal regions and to assess
representation of key related variables in climate models. The project
will involve using satellite observations and atmospheric reanalysis
data to characterize the influence of forest type and forest density on
SAF strength and the rate and timing of snowmelt across the boreal
biome. Identification of spatial patterns of SAF, along with the
underlying causes through examination of variables related to surface
energy dynamics, will provide information that can be used to improve
climate model representation of snow-vegetation-climate interactions.

This position is open to all applicants interested in climate modelling
and geospatial analysis. The successful candidate will have a strong
scientific background in geophysics, atmospheric sciences, physical
geography, or oceanography. Applicants should have strong numerical
skills, including computer programming and data manipulation, although
full training will be provided throughout the studentship to develop
relevant skills. Opportunities to participate in fieldwork will be
possible for interested candidates to enhance the process-based
understanding of energy and snow fluxes in forests.

Application deadline: 20 January 2017.

    Arctic Aquatic Ecology
    University of Quebec at Chicoutimi
    Quebec, Canada

Faculty at the University of Quebec at Chicoutimi (UQAC) announce a call
for applications for a PhD position in Arctic aquatic ecology. This
position is part of a Canada Research Chair program on boreal and polar
aquatic ecology and will be located in Quebec, Canada.

This project will contribute to a better understanding of the role and
fate of terrestrial carbon in lakes, with a focus on changes in fatty
acid production and availability in the food web along a large gradient
of terrestrial carbon. This position will work regularly with the
Chair's research network and collaborators.

The successful candidate will carry out spatial research that includes
lakes from boreal, subarctic, and arctic regions. Specifically, this
project will aim at quantifying the phytoplankton production of fatty
acids in different lakes and the influence of the production and quality
of fatty acids on zooplankton and fish. The research methods include the
evaluation of soil and water column carbon properties, quantification of
fatty acids in different aquatic organisms, and modeling of ecological
consequences of terrestrial carbon in lakes. The field work has been
planned to start in fall 2017.

Applicants must have a Master's degree in biology, limnology,
environmental sciences, or a closely related field. Application
materials include a curriculum vitae, a short statement of research
interests, and the names of two referees.

Knowledge of French is advantageous, but not obligatory.

Application deadline: 1 February 2017.

Position start date: 1 May or 1 September 2017.
