  1. Call for Session Abstracts
    European Geosciences Union General Assembly 2017
    23-28 April 2017
    Vienna, Austria

Organizers of a session entitled, "Boundary Layers in High Latitudes:
Physical and Chemical Exchange Processes over Ocean-Ice-Snow-Land
Surfaces" announce a call for abstract submissions. This session will be
held during the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2017,
which will convene 23-28 April 2017 in Vienna, Austria.

Abstract submission deadline: 13:00 Central European Time, 11 January
2017.

Session description:
AS2.3/CR6.4/OS5.5/SSS9.27
Boundary Layers in High Latitudes: Physical and Chemical Exchange
Processes over Ocean-Ice-Snow-Land Surfaces

Given the rapid changes in the polar regions, this session addresses key
physical and chemical processes, especially in the boundary layer, over
the Arctic and Antarctic where understanding is needed to improve
predictability of future changes in the polar regions. These processes
include surface exchange of heat, momentum, moisture, and chemical
constituents over increasingly complex ocean-ice-snow-land surfaces.
Also of importance is dynamical connection of polar regions to the
mid-latitudes for their supply of heat, moisture, and various chemical
species. Of increasing interest is the role of extremes in the
atmospheric circulation, particularly meridional transport events that
can disturb the physical and chemical state of the high latitudes, that
may be associated with rapid sea ice reduction, melting of the ice
sheets, and marine physical and ecosystem changes.

This session is intended to provide an interdisciplinary forum to bring
together researchers working in the areas of high-latitude weather and
climate, boundary layer exchange processes, chemistry, and oceanography.

Contributions in the following areas are encouraged:

  • Observations and research that explore physical and chemical exchange
    processes over ocean-ice-snow-land surfaces in the polar latitudes
    ranging from molecular to regional scales;
  • Results from high-elevation sites where similar exchange processes
    over snow and ice are important;
  • Results from field programs and observatories, insights from
    laboratory studies, and advances in modeling including parameterization
    of the boundary layer and reanalysis;
  • Advances in observing technology;
  • External controls on the boundary layer such as clouds, aerosols,
    radiation, and transport processes; and
  • The role of boundary layers in polar climate change and implications
    of climate change for surface exchange processes, especially in the
    context of reduced Arctic sea ice and physical and chemical changes
    associated with an increasing fraction of first year ice.

  1. Call for Abstracts
    3rd APECS International Online Conference 2017
    20 March 2017

Organizers of the 3rd Association of Polar Early Career Scientists
(APECS) International Online Conference 2017 announce a call for
abstract submissions. This year's theme is entitled, "Outside the Box:
Encouraging alternative solutions for undertaking and communicating
polar research." This conference will be held online on 20 March 2017.

Organizers are seeking abstracts for short 10-minute presentations that
relate this year's theme of encouraging alternative solutions for
undertaking and communicating polar research. As a new generation of
polar researchers stepping up to the plate, new and innovative polar
challenges must be embraced.

The ability to successfully address such challenges and steer the polar
world in a positive direction has far-reaching local, regional, and
global consequences. Researchers should venture "outside the box" of the
ideas that previous generations of polar researchers have left in order
to overcome the severity of polar challenges. New ideas regarding
international and interagency collaborations, idea-sharing between
poles, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches to research,
technology and the ability to modify and develop it to suit needs,
affordable methods of research, and improved ways of communicating
scientific and social research are needed. To this end, APECS is working
to foster the sharing of alternative solutions for undertaking and
communicating polar research.

Abstract submission deadline: 22:00 Greenwich Mean Time, 20 January 2017.

  1. Call for Abstracts - Extended Deadline
    Arctic Science Summit Week 2017
    31 March-7 April 2017
    Prague, Czech Republic

Organizers of the Arctic Science Summit Week (ASSW) 2017 announce an
extended deadline for abstract submissions. The new abstract submission
deadline is 10 January 2017. The ASSW 2017 meeting will convene 31
March7 April 2017 in Prague, Czech Republic.

The ASSW is an annual meeting of national and international
organizations focused on Arctic research and exploitation, which include
academia, government agencies, local communities, industry,
non-governmental organizations, and others. Organizers invite abstract
submissions for 27 thematic sessions.

Extended abstract submission deadline: 11:59 p.m. Central European Time,
10 January 2017.

  1. Call for Abstracts and Registration
    Polar Prediction Workshop 2017 and
    2nd Sea Ice Model Intercomparison Project Meeting
    27-30 March 2017
    Bremerhaven, Germany

Organizers announce a call for registration and abstracts submissions
for the Polar Prediction Workshop (PPW) 2017 and the 2nd Sea Ice Model
Intercomparison (SIMIP) Project meeting. These workshops will convene
27-30 March 2017 in Bremerhaven, Germany.

These workshops are jointly organized by the Polar Climate
Predictability Initiative (WCRP-PCPI), the Polar Prediction Project
(WWRP-PPP), the Sea Ice Prediction Network (SIPN), and SIMIP.

The PPW 2017 will convene 27-29 March beginning with the public Alfred
Wegener Lecture where a distinguished climate scientist is invited to
report on emerging fields of research for scientific exchange. This
year's lecture entitled "A Decade of Sea Ice Prediction" will be given
by Cecilia Bitz from the Atmospheric Science department at the
University of Washington. The lecture will review rapid advances in
predicting skills of Arctic sea ice conditions since The Sea Ice Outlook
began collecting and reporting predictions in 2008. The focus of the
subsequent Polar Prediction Workshop is on environmental prediction in
the polar regions on subseasonal to interannual timescales. As in
previous years, sea ice prediction will play a central role.

Desired outcomes include the compilation of recommendations for the 2017
Sea Ice Outlook season and the stimulation of collaborations in the
context of the Year of Polar Prediction (YOPP) that will occur
mid-2017mid-2019.

Abstract topics for the PPW 2017 workshop include:

  • Predictability;
  • Modelling, data assimilation, and forecasting;
  • Observations;
  • Verification; and
  • User needs.

The SIMIP workshop will be held 29-30 March and is devoted to
discussions about the sea ice simulations from the upcoming CMIP6
experiments (SIMIP), with three distinct aims:

  • To discuss and define best practices for the evaluation of sea-ice
    simulations against observations,
  • To identify and define new remote sensing and in situ sea ice
    observations that will allow for improved model evaluation and
    initialization, and
  • To discuss and coordinate the analysis of CMIP6 sea ice simulations
    for improved understanding of sea ice processes and improved sea ice
    projections.

The SIMIP workshop will primarily be a discussion meeting with a few
invited presentations and is organized by the WCRP-Climate and
Cryosphere (CliC) Sea ice and Climate Modeling Forum.

There is some funding available to support early career scientists. To
apply for early-career travel support, do so in the online form.

Abstract submission deadline for PPW 2017: 30 January 2017.

Registration deadline for both workshops: 30 January 2017.
