  1. Science Coordinator Position
    Conservation Biology
    Arctic Landscape Conservation Cooperative
    Anchorage or Fairbanks, Alaska

The Arctic Landscape Conservation Cooperative (LCC) seeks candidates for
a science coordinator position in conservation biology. This permanent
position is based in either Anchorage or Fairbanks, Alaska.

The Arctic LCC is a public-private partnership to promote coordination,
dissemination, and development of applied science to inform conservation
of natural and cultural resources in the face of climate change and
other landscape-scale stressors. Its efforts are directed by a steering
committee that provides guidance and oversight to the core staff. The
committee is composed of the designated representatives of State,
Federal, and Alaska Native entities participating in the Arctic LCC with
an emphasis on field-level staff responsible for management and
conservation of land and natural resources in the region. It is part of
a national/international network of 22 Landscape Conservation
Cooperatives.

The successful candidate will coordinate science in support of landscape
conservation strategies and ecosystem-based management in the Arctic.
The ideal candidate will be able to eventually lead and collaborate on
research in landscape, wildlife, and/or conservation ecology that
supports implementation of ecosystem-based approaches to natural
resource management. The Science Coordinator will engage in regional,
national, and international efforts to coordinate Arctic ecosystem
science and to help secure funding for high priority initiatives as well
as represent the interest of partners in various national meetings
associated with landscape conservation initiatives. As the Arctic LCC
provides some funding for research, the job also involves reviewing
science proposals and scientific publications.

Applications should include a cover letter, resume, and contact
information for three references.

Application deadline: Thursday, 6 October 2016.

  1. PhD Student Position
    Cross-disciplinary and Geoscience
    Department of Physical Geography
    Stockholm University
    Stockholm, Sweden

The Department of Physical Geography at Stockholm University seeks
candidates for a PhD position that will be part of the Nordic Centre of
Excellence "Resource Extraction and Sustainable Arctic Communities
(REXSAC)." This four-year position is based in Stockholm, Sweden.

REXSAC is building an interdisciplinary research environment to provide
new thinking about sustainable development, especially in the context of
Arctic mining. The successful candidate will be one of six PhD positions
starting in 2016/17 and will include opportunities for close
collaboration with other partners in REXSAC.

The combined effects of mining activities and other pressures in areas
that are experiencing rapid climate and environmental change are poorly
understood. This PhD project includes case-study analyses of current
mining impacts with regard to occurrence of metall(oid)s and their
bioavailability in different environmental compartments such as soil,
water, sediment, and vegetation. The research also includes analyses of
base-line (negligible mining impact) conditions and projections of
plausible future effects in Arctic environments.

Application deadline: Sunday,16 October 2016.
