  1. Postdoctoral Position Available
    Social Anthropology-Arctic Energy Focus
Norwegian University of Science and Technology
    Trondheim, Norway

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology announces an opening
for a postdoctoral researcher in social anthropology. This is a
temporary 2 year position based in Trondheim, Norway.

The successful candidate will join a research project called "Energy
Futures: Assessing Intermediary Expertise that Guides Arctic and Global
Hydrocarbon Development" and is associated with the department*s ongoing
specialization in Organizational Anthropology.

The objective is to improve knowledge in relation to how intermediaries
(energy consultants) generate learning environments across the energy
industry. Research objectives of the project include building a
conceptual terminology and typology of the kinds of assessments that
consultants produce, as well as the visualizing practices developed in
the creation of energy futures. The project will focus on aspects of
ethnographic research that relate to the creation and performance of
expertise, expert knowledge, and elite cultures more generally.

For more specific information on the project, go to:
http://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=1417570.

The successful applicant must hold a PhD or an equivalent degree within
social anthropology or a related field (STS, cultural geography, visual
anthropology). It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been
awarded prior to employment start date. Experience with ethnographic
research is desirable as is the ability to work independently.

Applications should include a cover letter, a research statement, a list
of publications, two sample publications, curriculum vitae, and the
names and contact information for three references.

The above listed materials should be submitted electronically through
Job Norge (https://www.jobbnorge.no/) and marked with the reference code
SVT-1311.

  1. PhD Student Position Available
    Chemical Oceanography
    University of Tromso
    Tromso, Norway

UiT The Arctic University of Norway, Faculty of Science and Technology,
has an opening for a PhD student/researcher in the area of Chemical
Oceanography. The position is attached to the Centre for Arctic Gas
Hydrate, Environment and Climate (CAGE) at UiT's Department of Geology.
The position is for a fixed term of 4 years.

Research in the Centre of excellence CAGE focuses on the role of the
Arctic Ocean methane hydrates in the context of environmental and
climate issues.

Successful candidate will investigate biogeochemical processes
associated with methane seepage and transport in the water column and
close to water-sediment interface, as well as their linkages to the
properties and transformation of organic matter in the water.

The PhD student is expected to actively collaborate with researchers
from the Norwegian Polar Institute (Tromso, Norway), University of Basel
(Austria), and Technical University of Denmark.

The position requires a Master's degree in chemical/biological
oceanography or a related field with expertise in microbiology and/or
biogeochemistry of organic matter. Knowledge in molecular methods
applicable for identification and quantification of microorganisms as
well as bioinformatics is beneficial. Lab work experience, experimental
work and experience at sea would be an asset. Basic computational skills
in Matlab and/or R are essential.

  1. PhD Student Position Available
    Remote Sensing of Sea Ice
    University of Bremen
    Bremen, Germany

The Institute of Environmental Physics (IUP) at the University of Bremen
is requesting applications for a PhD student/researcher in the area of
Remote sensing of sea ice. The position is for a fixed term of 3 years
and will be based in Bremen, Germany.

The main focus of the research will be to analyze the sources of
uncertainties (e.g. different spectral or angular resolution, varying
cloud cover, varying surface properties) and use existing radiative
transfer models to evaluate the uncertainty when comparing data from
satellite sensor and field or airborne campaigns. Such analyses and
evaluations have to be done for various measurement methods, surface and
atmospheric conditions. For the most common and important sources of
uncertainty, an empirical correction can be developed using radiative
transfer (RT) models. The task assumes not only running, but also
improving the RT models (both models are written in Fortran), and bulk
processing of satellite data (suggested to use Python).

This position requires a Master of Science or equivalent degree in
physics, oceanography, meteorology, remote sensing, geophysics, or
related fields. It also requires skills in scientific computer
programming (e.g., Python, IDL, Matlab, or similar) and a strong
interest to work in the field of satellite remote sensing. Expertise in
sea ice research will be viewed as favorable. The applicant should be a
team worker yet able to conduct independent research.

The application should include details of relevant qualifications and
experience, Curriculum Vitae, copies of transcripts, and names of three
references.

Application Deadline: Open Until Filled.

Expected Start Date: 1 August 2016.
