The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) and the Council of
Managers of National Antarctic Programmes (COMNAP) invite applications
to their Antarctic Research Fellowship Programs.
The SCAR Fellowship Program is designed to encourage the active
involvement of early-career scientists and engineers, social scientists
and humanities researchers in Antarctic research, and to build new
connections and further strengthen international capacity and
cooperation in Antarctic research.
The SCAR Fellowships are intended to allow researchers to undertake
short-term visits to major international laboratories, field facilities,
and/or institutes in or operated by SCAR member countries, so as to
become acquainted with recent advances in research and/or to develop
long-term links and partnerships. The work must be carried out in a
research group of a SCAR member country different from that of the
applicant's origin and current residence.

The COMNAP Antarctic Research Fellowship is similar to the SCAR
Fellowship Program in that it is designed to encourage the active
involvement of early-career Antarctic researchers and to strengthen
international capacity and cooperation in the spirit of the Antarctic
Treaty. Both Fellowship Programs allow the selected Fellow to become
acquainted with recent advances in research and/or to develop long-term
research linkages and international partnerships.
However, there are three primary differences between the SCAR and COMNAP
Fellowship Programmes. Firstly, the COMNAP Fellowship Programme is open
to any postgraduate researcher and is not limited to PhD students and
post-doctoral researchers. Secondly, it is intended to allow
researchers from a COMNAP member National Antarctic Programme country to
undertake short-term visits to major international laboratories, field
facilities, and/or institutes in or operated by other COMNAP member
National Antarctic Programmes. Finally, the proposed research should
contribute to the objectives of the home or host National Antarctic
Programme's research objectives.

The Arctic Ecology Program at Grand Valley State University is seeking a
graduate student to fill a crew leader position for the Summer 2016
field season and participate in the Arctic Ecology Program. The summer
position will be working in and around Barrow and Atqasuk, Alaska. The
graduate program will be based in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
The duties of this position will include field sampling of tundra
vegetation in Barrow and Atqasuk, Alaska, leading the field crew in
Alaska, coordinating logistics, organization and analyses of data
collected previously and by the candidate, and the completion of a
thesis and peer-reviewed publications, as well as the successful
completion of the requirements of the degree program.

The University of Lapland is seeking a Postdoctoral Research/Teacher to
focus on Arctic Indigenous Peoples. This is a full time position with a
term of 3 years based in Rovaniemi, Finland.
The University of Lapland’s research profile focuses on change in the
Arctic and Northern areas. Research on arctic indigenous peoples
supports this profile. This research field is broadly defined so that
indigenous peoples are approached from the structures and strategies of
the peoples themselves, as well as from national and international
perspectives. Some of the key research topics of the profiling area
include the rights of arctic indigenous peoples, land use, culture,
language and traditional ways of life. Research in this field offers a
critical and multidisciplinary view into the lives of northern and
arctic communities.
The successful applicant is required to have a doctoral degree, the
ability to conduct independent scientific work, and the necessary
teaching skills required in the position. The teaching language of this
position can be Finnish, Sami, and/or English.
A foreigner or a non-native Finnish citizen to be selected for a
teaching and research position can, when necessary, be required to learn
Finnish to a reasonable degree within a certain time.

The Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER) at the University
of Alaska Anchorage is recruiting for a new director. This position is
based at the University of Alaska Anchorage in Anchorage, Alaska.
ISER's mission is to conduct non-partisan research to help Alaskans and
others understand social and economic systems and support informed
public and private decision-making. Areas of research at the institute
include economic development, fiscal policy, natural resource
management, education, health, and arctic social systems. The
successful applicant will represent ISER, inside and outside the
university, will need to be familiar with policy-oriented, applied
research, and should have an understanding of Alaska’s economy,
culturally diverse peoples, and policy issues relevant to Alaska.
The ISER Director will be expected to generate or capitalize on funding
opportunities relevant to ISER’s mission and to secure external funding.
The new director will supervise about 40 faculty members, researchers,
and administrative staff, and coordinate research activities. This job
requires either a Ph.D., a terminal degree, or senior-level
administrative experience in a field relevant to ISER’s mission.
