The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) invites the community to Arctic
Matters Day, a public symposium to be held Thursday, 14 January 2016
from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The symposium will be held at the NAS
building at 2101 Constitution Avenue, Washington, D.C.
Arctic Matters Day is a free public program, hosted by NAS that will
provide an overview of the dramatic environmental changes affecting the
Arctic region, and the many ways that such changes can ultimately affect
us all. Through an array of engaging presentations, discussions, and
interactive displays, the public will explore how many facets of our
lives (for instance, our coastlines, our weather, our fish supplies, and
our security) are tied to what is happening in this "isolated" part of
the world.
ARCUS will be joining other exhibitors as part of this event. The ARCUS
exhibit will be hosted by Robert Rich (ARCUS Executive Director), Jackie
Grebmeier and Lee Cooper (Arctic scientists and recipients of the 2015
Alaska Ocean Leadership Award), and Deanna Wheeler (PolarTREC teacher
from J. C. Parks Elementary School). They will be sharing their
first-hand knowledge of working the Arctic. The exhibit will have a
variety of information and hands-on materials for the attendees,
including arctic marine organism samples, cold weather gear used by
scientists, underwater videos, elementary student artwork, and teacher
lesson plans. In addition, ARCUS will have information about our
services and membership opportunities. The exhibit will be open during
the entire one-day event.
