The meteorological research division of Environment Canada seeks a
postdoctoral candidate. The position is for a fixed term of three years,
and will be based in Dorval (Montreal), Quebec, Canada.

The successful candidate will work on the research and development of
high resolution (~4 km) pan Arctic ice-ocean short-term forecasting
systems. More specifically, the project will involve the improvement of
air-ice and ice-ocean stress formulations by including the effect of sea
ice morphology (i.e. the form drag). Forecasts with and without the form
drag parameterization will be compared to observations of sea ice
velocity. The impact of the form drag parameterization on the
distribution of ice volume in the Arctic will also be investigated.

The applicant must have a PhD in meteorology, oceanography, or physics,
and also be able to code in Fortran.

Northumbria University seeks a PhD student for a position in climate
modeling, focusing on atmosphere-forest-snow interactions. This is a
full-time, three-year position that will be based in Newcastle upon
Tyne, United Kingdom.

This PhD studentship will evaluate current parameterisations of mass and
energy fluxes in snow-forest models, which will guide the development
and implementation of new, dynamic (changing with plant functional type
(PFT) and density) parameterisations in the land surface model CLM5 of
the NCAR Community Earth System Model (CESM1). Evaluation of CLM5 and
CESM1 simulations before and after inclusion of dynamic
parameterisations will be undertaken to assess: a) differences between
trends in simulated and observed NH SCE, and b) strength of radiation
feedbacks in different NH PFT.

Applicants should hold a first or upper second class honors degree (in a
relevant subject) from a British higher education institution, or
equivalent. Students who are not UK/EU residents are eligible to apply,
provided they hold the relevant academic qualifications, together with
an IELTS score of at least 6.5.

The Alaska Projects Office at Cold Regions Research and Engineering
Laboratory (CRREL), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers seeks to fill a
research scientist position in cryosphere and geospatial sciences. The
position will be based in Fairbanks, Alaska.

The successful candidate will investigate the cryospheric environment,
with emphasis on the Arctic, through surface experiments, remote
instrumentation, and through interagency and international science
programs. The position will be responsible for proposing and executing
investigations relative to increased focus of U.S. agencies on changing
Arctic environment, and will provide support to the National Strategy
for the Arctic. The position will also apply basic and applied research
in the cryosphere, using geospatial methods and terrain
characterization; investigate climate and impacts of cold environment on
military and civil infrastructure and operations; and apply professional
knowledge and experience in science and engineering, experimental
techniques, mathematics, and numerical modeling to perform assigned
research investigations.

The Faculty of Engineering and the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of
Environment, Earth, and Resources (CHIFEER) at the University of
Manitoba seek to hire a professor for a position in applied
electromagnetics and sea ice remote sensing. This full-time position at
the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor will be based in Winnipeg,
Manitoba, Canada.

This bridge-position between the two faculties has been created to take
advantage of the state-of-the-art research that will be facilitated by
the CFI funded Churchill Marine Observatory (CMO) and leverage existing
remote sensing and applied electromagnetics expertise in the Centre for
Earth Observation Science (CEOS) and the Department of Electrical and
Computer Engineering (ECE), the expected home-department for the
position. The position's research profile is envisaged to fit in with
existing research being conducted on the detection, impacts and or
mitigation of oil (and other transportation related contaminant) spills
in sea ice-covered environments.

The ideal candidate should have a record of research excellence in the
area of applied electromagnetics as applied to sea ice remote sensing.
Building on existing strengths and programs in ECE and CEOS the
successful candidate will have interests in forwarding the group's
research into the development and application of technologies to gain
information on geophysical, thermodynamic, and chemical properties of
snow covered sea ice and the polar ocean using remote sensing. This will
require collaborative research on the study of weathering, evaporation,
dispersive effects on oil trajectories in sea ice and the ocean across a
range of initial conditions and endpoints.

The Centre for Earth Observation Science (CEOS) at the University of
Manitoba invites applications for two full-time NSERC industrial
research chair, tenure-track appointments at the rank of Assistant or
Associate Professor. The positions will be based in Winnipeg, Manitoba,
Canada.

Both positions will encompass the broad field of Arctic System Science
with a particular emphasis on the detection, impacts and or mitigation
of oil (and other transportation related contaminant) spills in sea ice-
covered environments. This can include the fields of sea ice geophysics,
remote sensing, thermodynamics, genomics, geomicrobiology, low
temperature isotope systematics, biogeochemistry, physical, chemical and
biological oceanography, and physical and chemical measurement and/or
modeling of oil spills in sea ice.

The successful candidates must have a strong background in one or more
of these areas, experience in working within a team approach to science,
Arctic field experience and have completed their PhD, and/or have
postdoctoral experience, by the time of their appointment.
