The Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Policy (ACCAP) along with
the Atmospheric Department at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) will
host a webinar titled "The North Pacific SST 'Blob' and Alaska Winter
Climate" on Monday, 21 September 2015 from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. AKDT. It
will be presented by Richard James, Senior Scientist, Prescient
Weather Ltd.

Unusual climate anomalies over North America in the past two winters
have stimulated renewed interest in the seasonal influence of North
Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) patterns on the atmospheric
circulation in the Pacific-North America region. Hartmann (2015)
proposed that a "North Pacific Mode" of SST anomalies was partly
responsible for the dominant ridge-trough structure over North America
in winter 2013-2014. This study examines the historical connection
between the North Pacific Mode and winter climate anomalies over Alaska,
and identifies both similarities with, and important differences from,
the influence of other leading SST modes that are related to El Nino
Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO).
It also illustrates and explores the non-linear nature of Alaska's
winter climate response to the North Pacific Mode.

Registration and more information available at:

This webinar is also available for in-person viewing in room 401 of the
IARC/Akasofu building on the UAF campus.
