  1. University of Edinburgh seeks Postdoctoral Candidate
    Ice-Sheet Ocean Modeling
    Edinburgh, Scotland

The University of Edinburgh seeks a postdoctoral research associate for
a position in ice-sheet ocean modeling. The position is for a fixed term
of 30 months, and will be based in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The successful applicant is expected to become familiar with the coupled
model developed by a postdoctoral researcher at the British Antarctic
Survey (BAS). This will involve an understanding of both oceanographic
and glaciological components, which are developed in Fortran code. They
will work to apply algorithmic differentiation software to the coupled
model, and be responsible for the setup of a suite of experiments
designed to determine the relative importance of ocean forcing,
topographic uncertainty, and coupled ice-melt feedbacks on marine ice
sheet evolution. Additionally, this position will work with
co-investigators at BAS to integrate oceanographic, geophysical, and
glaciological observations into a model of Pine Island Glacier in order
to assess the likely drivers of recent mass loss from the glacier.

The ideal candidate for this post will have a PhD (or near completion)
in a quantitative discipline (physics, applied mathematics,
computational geoscience or similar), a familiarity with numerical
methods involved with computational climate modeling, and experience
with programming in C, C++, or Fortran. A familiarity with concepts of
dynamic ice flow and/or ice-ocean interactions is desirable.

Application deadline: 14 September 2015.

  1. NERSC seeks Senior Scientist
    Sea Ice Remote Sensing
    Bergen, Norway

The Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC) seeks a
senior scientist for a position in sea ice remote sensing. This is a
permanent position located in Bergen, Norway.

This position will lead the sea ice and land ice remote sensing research
group at NERSC. The group conducts research on retrieval algorithms for
and applications of sea ice drift, sea ice type classification, sea ice
thickness and detection of leads, ridges and icebergs obtained from
multiple satellite sensor data. The group also works with retrieval of
elevation and volume changes of ice sheets from altimeter data. The
successful applicant shall lead the research on development of new and
innovative algorithms and methods for retrieval and applications of sea
ice and land ice information from present and future satellite missions.

Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent in sea ice/land ice/ocean
remote sensing, oceanography, applied mathematics, meteorology,
geophysics or related fields; extensive understanding of sea ice
dynamics and thermodynamics; documented research experience in remote
sensing of sea ice; and practical experience in conducting sea
ice/oceanographic field experiments. A minimum of five years experience
in coordinating national and international research and development
projects is required, as is the ability to seek and secure external
funds for projects from public funding sources and industry. Applicants
should also have an established network in sea ice and cryosphere
research, including connections to users and stakeholders.

Application deadline: 30 September 2015.

  1. NERSC seeks Postdoctoral Candidate
    Meteorology/Oceanography
    Bergen, Norway

The Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC) seeks a
postdoctoral candidate in meteorology/oceanography. This is a two-year
position that will be based in Bergen, Norway.

The successful applicant will be part of the SNOWGLACE (The changing
Arctic cryosphere: snow and sea-ice impact on prediction and climate
over Europe and Asia) project, which aims to provide new knowledge and
capabilities to elucidate and improve predictability of the role of the
Arctic cryosphere on weather and climate change. This position will use
the Norwegian Climate Prediction Model (NorCPM) to initialize sea-ice
conditions in the Arctic and diagnose the climate response and
potentially improved predictability.

Candidates must hold a PhD in meteorology, oceanography, applied
mathematics or equivalent. Applicants should preferably have experience
with Earth system modeling (in particular with the Norwegian Earth
System Model) and/or data assimilation (in particular with
ensemble-based methods). In addition, applicants should have good skills
in analyzing model output data and in statistical analysis. A good
publication record or documented publication skills is an advantage.
Technical qualifications include excellent knowledge of Fortran (or C)
and analytical software such as MATLAB, Python, or R.

Application deadline: 15 September 2015.

  1. University of Manitoba seeks Graduate Student
Remote Sensing of Freshwater in Hudson Bay
    Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

The Centre for Earth Observation at the University of Manitoba seeks a
PhD or MSc student to work on remote sensing of freshwater in the
Canadian Hudson Bay. This is a fulltime position that will be based in
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

The successful applicant will join the "BaySys: Freshwater-marine
coupling in the Hudson Bay System" project, the goal of which is to
provide a scientific basis to separate the relative effects of climate
change from those of hydroelectric regulation of freshwater on changing
physical, biological, and biogeochemical conditions in the Hudson Bay.
The goal of the MSc/PhD project is to use field observations and various
satellite-derived freshwater proxies to improve our understanding of the
distribution of freshwater in Hudson Bay. This could include
observations and measurements of CDOM and suspended sediment, sea ice
concentration and properties, oxygen isotope ratios, salinity (ESA's
SMOS) and sea surface height from altimetry. The research will involve
participation in fieldwork that will include observations onboard the
icebreaker CCGS Amundsen and at coastal locations.

To apply, please email a curriculum vitae, transcripts, a short
statement of relevant research experience and interests, and the contact
information for two referees. Application materials should be sent to
Jens.Ehn [at] umanitoba.ca and Simon_Belanger [at] uqar.ca.

This position will remain open until filled.
