Community Development From The Inside Out

a conference exploring the incorporation of traditional knowledge into
community development

Conference Date: November 7 and 8, 1997

This conference is designed to bring interested parties together in an
atmosphere of equality to share ideas on community development and to
explore new solutions that fit with today's social, political and economic
climate. Participants and speakers will include members of small
communities, the keepers of traditional knowledge and representatives from
government, industry and the academic world. The conference will provide a
balanced forum for discussing the practical and ethical issues involved in
the incorporation of traditional knowledge into community development.

POTENTIAL TOPICS

Practical Issues:
Discussion of case studies which present the advantages and disadvantages
of this approach; which methodologies have or have not worked; what kinds
of development projects lend themselves well to the incorporation of
traditional knowledge; what are some potential development projects.

Ethical Issues:
Intellectual property rights; how 'sacred' knowledge may or may not be
used; how is traditional knowledge to be protected, patented or copyrighted
