Dear Colleague,

At the request of NSF, the Polar Research Board has appointed a
committee to evaluate NSF's Arctic Natural Sciences Program (ANSP). The
committee has been charged to study the program's operation and provide
input on how the program's managers can set priorities and maintain a
balanced research portfolio given the diverse scientific issues within
its purview. The committee's final report will suggest ways to improve
the program's management strategy, consider how to compare proposals in
diverse fields, and give guidance on how to judge which proposals are
best suited for the ANSP versus other, related NSF programs.

To gather information for its evaluation, the committee has designed a
questionnaire for Arctic researchers and posted it on the PRB's
homepage. This is your opportunity, as a working member of the Arctic
science community, to provide your frank views and suggestions about how
to improve the ANSP. Your input will be kept confidential and will be
considered by the committee as it writes its final report and
recommendations. The PRB homepage and the questionnaire are located at
http://www2.nas.edu/prb/

Thanks in advance for your input.

Chris Elfring Executive Director, Polar Research Board National Research
Commission
