Dear Colleague,

The National Academy of Sciences is promoting the physical sciences, social
sciences, and mathematics through its house journal, the Proceedings of the
National Academy of Sciences. Specifically, PNAS is running a series of
Special Features, each of which consists of 6-10 short review articles on an
area of particular interest.

The next Special Feature is on rapid climate change and scheduled to appear
in the Winter of 1999. The following authors have been commissioned to
write for the Feature:

  • Richard Alley; Ice evidence for abrupt change
  • Wally Broecker; Thermohaline circulation
  • Tom Lowell: Glacial changes
  • Jochem Marotzke; Thermohaline Circulation Changes: Mechanisms, Modeling,
    and Predictability
  • Jonathan Overpeck and Robert Webb: Warm Climate Abrupt Change
  • Dorothy Peteet; Land evidence for abrupt change
  • Ray Pierehumbert; Pacific Ocean - atmosphere interactions
  • Thomas Stocker; Models and data

PNAS is inviting researchers to submit original research papers to be
considered for publication in this issue. Peer review of all submitted
papers will be handled quickly. All page charges and color charges will be
waived for accepted papers. The Special Feature will also be made freely
available on the Web see http://www.pnas.org.

Submission of papers to be considered for publication in the same issue as
the Rapid Climate Change Special Feature, or inquiries about submission
should be sent as soon as possible to me
