ARCSS DATA MANAGER
ASSOCIATE SCIENTIST

The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC),
http://www-nsidc.colorado.edu, at the Cooperative Institute for Research in
Environmental Sciences (CIRES), http://cires.colorado.edu/jobs, serves as a
national information and referral center in support of glaciological
research.

Our mission is to make fundamental contributions to cryospheric science and
excel in managing data and disseminating information in order to advance
understanding of the Earth system.

JOB OVERVIEW
The Data Manager coordinates all aspects of data management for the
Arctic System Science (ARCSS) Data Coordination Center (ADCC) at NSIDC and
is responsible for implementation of the ARCSS data management plan.
See http://arcss.colorado.edu.

The ADCC serves as the mandated data archive for scientists who are
supported by the ARCSS Program in the Office of Polar Programs (OPP) at the
U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). The two key elements of
responsibility are making the ARCSS data available to users and ensuring the
preservation of the archive. Effective use of information technology is
essential for success in both key elements of responsibility.

The Data Manager serves as the primary liaison for data management
issues for several committees, which advise and manage the elements of
the NSF ARCSS Program, as well as the liaison to the 120+ scientists who
collect data as a result of research supported by the ARCSS Program.
Regular travel is required in the role of liaison for data management.

The proposal document for the grant that supports this position contains
the outline of the data management plan for the ARCSS Program. This
data management plan requires regular review and evaluation. Amendments
to the plan, including technology upgrades, data policies, and short-
and long-term goals must be negotiated with the Principal Investigator
and the NSF Program Officer.

The Data Manager reports to the Principal Investigator for the NSF grant
that supports the ADCC and coordinates the regular meetings of the
advisory committee that oversees the ADCC. Regular reports are prepared
as required under the terms of the grant as well as presentations on the
ADCC at professional conferences. The position is full-time.

long-term and day-to-day
2. Serve as ADCC liaison with other department heads at NSIDC

various committees that advise and manage the NSF ARCSS Program
5. Facilitate the development of data transfer plans for each scientist
supported by the NSF ARCSS program
