Dear Colleague,

I would like to inform you about a session on "Ice and permafrost
drilling in high mountains" taking place during the EGS Millennium
Conference in Nice, France, from 25-29 April 2000.

Symposium co-sponsored by ALPCLIM and PACE

"Ice and permafrost drilling in high mountains"

An increasing activity of drilling into glaciers and permafrost within
cold high-mountain areas has developed over the past years. Scientific
results from such drilling projects at low latitudes are complementary to
deep drilling into polar ice sheets and permafrost.

They provide important insights concerning the origin and flow dynamics
(sliding, deformation, bed processes) of surface and ground ice,
paleoclimatic evidence of Holocene and recent temperature variability, and
unique information about decadal to secular trends in atmospheric
composition.

The symposium aims at reviewing presently available knowledge and giving an
overview of ongoing research projects. Emphasis is on site investigation
(temperature, stratigraphy, geometry, etc. of investigated environmental
archives and moving ice bodies), applied technologies (drilling, borehole
logging, core analysis) and interpretation with respect to reconstruction,
modelling and monitoring of climate at various temporal and spatial scales
(time series, long-term observations).

Convenors: Wilfried Haeberli, Dietmar Wagenbach

We would greatly appreciate your active participation in this meeting and
invite you to submit an abstract before 15 December. For submission
procedures and further organizational details please refer to

Best regards.
