NOTICE TO ARCTIC RESEARCHERS VISITING THE NORTH SLOPE OF ALASKA

Logistics support in Barrow, Alaska is available at no cost, on a
limited basis to National Science Foundation-supported researchers through
NSF's Cooperative Agreement with the Barrow Arctic Science Consortium
(BASC). Facilities and equipment available may include:

Facilities for researchers available just north of Barrow at UIC-NARL (the
old Naval Arctic Research Laboratory installation) include:
Laboratories, shop space, offices and heated storage.

Bunk room lodging with communal kitchen facilities is available at the
Arctic Research Facility (ARF) at UIC-NARL on a space-available basis. Use
of the ARF is possible through an agreement between BASC and the North Slope
Borough Department of Wildlife Management.

Equipment

BASC has some equipment available for use by researchers. This includes
insulated and un-insulated tents, generators, ATVs, snow machines, sleds, a
Boston Whaler (16´), tools, and limited cold weather gear. In addition,
limited access to ARF equipment is available on a first-come first-served
basis. ARF equipment includes ATVs, snow machines and some cold weather
gear.

The following services are available in the community of Barrow, but are
not included in the NSF/BASC Cooperative Agreement.
* commercial hotels for lodging,
* limited options to rent trucks and cars, and
* charter air service is available from Barrow-based companies.
