http://www-nsidc.colorado.edu, of the Cooperative Institute for
Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES, http://cires.colorado.edu/jobs)
at the University of Colorado in Boulder, serves as a national information
and referral center in support of glaciological research. Our mission is to
make fundamental contributions to cryospheric science and excel in managing
data and disseminating information in order to advance understanding of the
Earth system.

JOB OVERVIEW
Assist project leader/Principal Investigator in fulfilling several NSF,
NASA, and IARC-funded grants for polar research by simulating lake ice
growth, heat flux between lake ice and atmosphere, and thermal regime of
ground under lakes, using a two-dimensional finite element model for
heat transfer with phase change. The position reports to the Principal
Investigator.

DUTIES
1. Modify the existing two-dimensional finite element heat transfer
model for lake ice studies.
2. Use the modified model to simulate lake ice growth, heat fluxes
between lake ice and the atmosphere, and ground thermal conditions under
lakes in high latitudes.
3. Contribute to presentations and publications to inform the research
community of the results.

QUALIFICATIONS
* Masters degree in physical sciences, mathematics, mechanical
engineering, or equivalent, with a strong background in modeling with
finite element analysis
* Familiarity with numerical simulations using FORTRAN-based code in a
UNIX environment
* Organizational skills and attention to detail

HIGHLY DESIRABLE
* Ph.D. in physical and geophysical sciences or mechanical engineering
