The University Courses on Svalbard (UNIS) is offering two upper level
courses designed for Ph.D. or Masters level students. The first is "Light
climate and Primary Productivity in the Arctic", the second is "Marine
Zooplankton And Sympagic Fauna (Ice Fauna) Of Svalbard Waters".
Contact information is provided below. More information is located at the

Course 1
LIGHT CLIMATE AND PRIMARY PRODUCTIVITY IN THE ARCTIC

     Course code: AB303 (3 vt/9 ECTS)
        Duration: 15 May - 16 June 2000

Application deadline: 15 March 2000

The course includes a 6-day field course at the Ny Alesund research station
Content: The main factors (light regime, temperature, nutrients, salinity
etc.) determining primary production in the Arctic will be the principle
focus of this course. How phytoplankton and macroalgae acclimate to
variations in the light regime (irradiance, spectral composition and day
length) will be studied. Lectures will deal with algal photosynthesis,
general physiology and ecology the differences that exist between various
algal classes. Laboratory exercises include studies on how different algal
groups utilize available light for photosynthesis and growth. Experiments to
measure oxygen productivity as a function of irradiance as well as
chromatography of light harvesting pigments will be carried out.

Costs: The course is paid for by UNIS. Students must pay (or get financed
through a grant) their own travel costs, food during the stay (about NOK 100
pr. day) and their accommodation in Longyearbyen (NOK 2500 pr. month for a
single room with kitchen access). There will be a fee of NOK 100 pr. day to
help cover the cost of the stay in Ny Alesund (which includes student food
and accommodation).

How to apply: A standard UNIS application form is available from the UNIS
home page http://www.unis.no your local study counselor (within Norway) or
may be requested directly from UNIS.

Course 2
MARINE ZOOPLANKTON AND SYMPAGIC FAUNA (ICE FAUNA) OF SVALBARD WATERS

     Course code: AB310 (3 vt/9 ECTS)
        Duration: 10 September - 17 October 2000

Application deadline: 15 April 2000

Where: The course is given at UNIS, Longyearbyen, Svalbard and includes a
two-week field cruise to the permanent ice edge north of Svalbard onboard
the research vessel "Jan Mayen".

Content: Lectures will focus on the identification of organisms, techniques
for quantifying their behaviour and life history, zoogeographical
distribution of important species and basic ecological features of the
pelagic and the sympagic habitat. During the excursion samples will be taken
from different pelagic and sympagic habitats (fjords, coastal waters, near
the sea-ice edge) in Svalbard waters. Lab-exercises will focus on
identification of organisms, quantification of collected samples and trophic
relationships.

Costs: The course is paid for by UNIS. Students must pay (or get financed
through a grant) their own travel costs, and accommodation in Longyearbyen
(NOK 2500 pr. month for a single room with kitchen access). There is a fee
of NOK 140 pr. day during the cruise.

How to apply: A standard UNIS application form is available from the UNIS
home page http://www.unis.no, your local study counsellor (within Norway)
or may be requested directly from UNIS.
