Karen DeClerk at jobs [at] cires.colorado.edu. The National Snow and Ice Data
Center (NSIDC) is announcing a job vacancy for the position of
Hydro-Climatology Research Scientist at the University of Colorado at

Boulder. The vacancy opens 25 July and will close when filled.

NSIDC RESEARCH SCIENTIST, HYDRO-CLIMATOLOGY

The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), http://nsidc.org , serves
as a national information and referral center in support of
glaciological research. Our mission is to make fundamental
contributions to cryospheric science and excel in managing data and
disseminating information in order to advance understanding of the Earth
system.

POSITION OVERVIEW
Work with the Principal Investigator and collaborators at other
institutions in developing a system for monitoring and assessing
hydro-climatic variability/change in the Arctic terrestrial drainages,
for developing historical time series of hydrologic budget components
and for analysis of resulting data sets. This NASA-funded work will
involve blending data from EOS-data streams and other satellite
platforms, station records and output from numerical weather prediction
and hydrologic models. This position reports to the Principal
Investigator.

DUTIES
Coordinate efforts at several collaborating institutions to compile
gridded time series of hydrologic budget components. This will involve
integrating time series from EOS and other NASA data streams (e.g., snow
cover and surface properties from MODIS, SMMR and SSM/I), station
records (precipitation and temperature), numerical weather prediction
models (e.g., precipitation, vapor flux convergence and temperatures
from NCEP and ECWMF reanalyses), hydrologic models (runoff and simulated
river discharge) and thermal models (thickness of seasonal freeze/thaw
depths).

Use these data sets to conduct basic research addressing Arctic
hydro-climatic processes, variability and change, in collaboration with
the Principal Investigator, graduate students and other collaborators.

Report on database development and associated research through
publications and presentations.

REQUIRED QUALIFICIATIONS
· PhD. in meteorology, climatology, hydrology or other relevant
discipline, or equivalent
· Experience with analysis of remote sensing data
· Ability to process and analyze large and diverse data sets
· Excellent oral and written communication skills
· Ability to work as a team player in database development and
associated research

PREFERENCE GIVEN FOR
· Familiarity with Fortran and graphics packages (especially IDL) on
UNIX platforms
· Familiarity with current NASA satellite imaging sensors
· Experience with GIS
· Experience with numerical modeling
· Prior experience with and an interest in issues of Arctic climate
variability and change

The position will be filled as a Research Scientist of appropriate level
within CIRES and as a Research Associate at the University of Colorado
at Boulder and will be eligible for employee benefits, including 22 days
of vacation per year and an excellent savings plan. No relocation
assistance is available for this position. Screening of applications
will begin on July 25 and continue until the position is filled. To
apply, email, mail, or fax (303.492.1149), a letter of interest, full
