Announcement from the American Polar Society

The American Polar Society is proud to announce seven recipients of
their coveted HONORARY MEMBERSHIP award. This, the Society's highest
award, is presented to those who have distinguished themselves in the
field in either the Arctic or Antarctic. Honorary Membership has been
awarded only 32 times since its inception in 1934. Previous recipients
include General David Brainard, Admiral Richard E. Byrd, Dr. Vilhjalmur
Stefansson, Dr. Paul Siple, Dr. Lincoln Ellsworth, Dr. Laurence M.
Gould, COL Norman Vaughan, and Dr. Lincoln Washburn.

The new awardees are as follows:

Dr. Norbert Untersteiner
Dr. Knut Aagaard
VADM George Steele, USN
CDR Edward Ward, USN
Dr. David Elliot
Dr. Arnold Gordon
BGEN Keith Greenaway, RCAF

The awards will be conferred at an Awards Banquet during American Polar
Society Symposium in Boulder, Colorado on the evening of 5 October 2000
(see ArcticInfo message posted on 4/27/00). Friends, relatives, and
