The Institue of Arctic Biology is recruiting for a GIS Technician/Data
Manager who will provide support for a new remote GIS facility at the
Toolik Field Station.

POSITION: GIS Technician /Data Manager Full-time
SALARY: $21.47 (DOE)
OPENING DATE: September 18, 2000
CLOSING DATE: October 6, 2000

RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide development, system management, maintenance,
and support for a new remote GIS facility at Toolik Lake, Alaska for use
in mapping and data analysis of arctic ecosystem and for land use
planning; develop a Web-based component to the system science;
troubleshoot hardware, software, and maintain a local area network at
the field station. The candidate will spend approximately 2-3 months
living and working at the Toolik Field Station each summer, otherwise at
UAF.

QUALIFICATIONS: VALID DRIVER'S LICENSE

Demonstrated system-administration experience supporting microcomputers
and UNIX workstations, data management and analysis of spatial data,
demonstrated research experience.

Skills in working with end-users in a diverse computing environment
(Mac, Sun, PC, printers, scanners, plotters, digitizers); GPS systems;
working with a variety of spatial analysis packages, including ARC/INFO,
ArcView, LAS, and/or other remote sensing packages; Web design;
cartographic background using mapping software.

Ability to work as part of a research team; work in a remote field
environment; learn vegetation types.

Education/Experience, Masters Degree or equivalent experience in related
technical field as resource development, remote sensing, computer
sciences, mathematics, or statistics, demonstrated research experience,
preferably in ecological research, as part of a Masters or Ph.D.
program, and/or extensive work experience.
