The Arctic Research Consortium of the U.S. (ARCUS), on behalf of the
National Science Foundation, is inviting participation in a workshop to
plan the development of integrated, web-based geographic information
systems (GIS) for the circumarctic. The Arctic GIS Workshop will take
place 22-24 January 2001 in Seattle, Washington and is open to
interested participants.

To promote the creation and flow of georeferenced data and related
discoveries -- within the Arctic research community and to the broader
public -- the NSF has asked ARCUS to help gather community input, and to
prepare recommendations to guide a development plan. Workshop
participants will help identify which Arctic science issues would
benefit from improved GIS capability, what path could be taken to
address those issues, and the anticipated impacts in terms of research
and societal benefits.

To register for the Arctic GIS Workshop, or for more information,
including the tentative workshop agenda, see the ARCUS web site at
http://www.arcus.org/gis/ or contact Renee Crain at renee [at] arcus.org or
907/474-1600.
