The Circumpolar PhD Network in Arctic Environmental Studies announces
the PhD Course:

"Industrial Impact on Natural and Social Environment"
Kola Peninsula and Nenets Okrug, NW Russia
2-19 September 2001

The PhD course "Industrial Impact on Natural and Social Environment" is
the second in the chain of interdisciplinary research education courses
arranged by the Circumpolar PhD Network in Arctic Environmental Science
(CAES). It is part of a "twin course program" arranged in co-operation
between CAES and the Circumpolar Arctic Social Science PhD-network
(CASS).

The aim of the course is to examine the interaction between three parts
of environment: Industrial Environment, Natural Environment and Social
Environment. The location of the course in Kola Peninsula and Nenets
Okrug, NW Russia gives a unique opportunity to students with various
scientific backgrounds to study complex and severe transformations in all
three above-mentioned parts of the environment. The region contains similar
types of industry and nature as in the Nordic countries. The rapid and
massive industrialization of this area together with recent political
and economic changes has caused what can be regarded as an extreme
situation, where links between causes and effects are more obvious than
in less disturbed regions. In addition, due to the multitude of ethnic
groups and cultures, the region provides good opportunities to study the
contradictions between modern and traditional livelihoods.

The course topics will be covered by a team of internationally
recognized researchers from the following disciplines: biology, ecology,
geography, environmental management, anthropology, sociology, technology
and human work sciences. The course program also includes contacts with
local experts, administrators/politicians, and study visits to
industries and local communities.

The course is designed for 20 students. The course comprises 18 days of
intensive work including lectures, seminars, discussions, and field
excursions. In addition to this, participants will be requested to
prepare a seminar paper for presentation during the course. Due to the
intensity of work and number of contact hours with qualified senior
researchers/lecturers academic credits given to the course are
considered to be equivalent to six credits (1 credit = 40 study hours).

There will be a possibility to participate in the international conference
on Industrialization in the North that is planned to be arranged
directly after the course.

WHO CAN APPLY:
PhD students or students who are planning to do PhD.
