PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Moraine ridges form prominent parts of the glacial landscape in valleys
beneath the highest coastline in northern Sweden (locally termed De Geer
moraines and Niemisel moraines). Their genesis with respect to
deposition of sediments and formation of the landforms are poorly known;
previous investigations are of old age and our knowledge on glacial
sedimentology and dynamics have increased considerably during the last
decade. A further intriguing fact is the quite new knowledge that
landforms in this part of Sweden have "survived" later glaciations. With
this as a background, we want to start a PhD project that, with modern
sedimentological methods (carried out in excavator-dug trenches),
investigate these landforms with respect to their internal composition
and structural properties. From this, it is expected to put up process
models that will give us new information on glacial dynamics and glacial
history of the investigation area.

We preferentially seek a Quaternary Geologist or Physical Geographer
(B.Sc or, preferably, a M.Sc.) with some experience in glacial
sedimentology. The applicant must be prepared for substantial field
seasons (c. 2 months per year). Candidates should be available by 1 May
2001 (negotiable to 1 June 2001).

The 4-year-long position is financed by a faculty studentship (SEK
13,000 per month during the first 18 months followed by a salary of
16,500 SEK/month) at Lund University (http://www.lu.se), and running
costs are paid by a substantial grant from the Swedish Geological Survey
(SGU).

Applications, labelled "Ref. MN B21 164/2001", including curriculum
vitae, transcript of record, and other relevant documents (all
attested), must have arrived at the following address no later than 11
April 2001:
