Data Telemetry Project
Omnet, Inc. has received Office of Naval Research (ONR) funding for
feasibility and design studies to develop a global data collection
service based on the Iridium satellite system and, then, if justified,
to develop the shore-based physical and management infrastructure. ONR
has also funded another company for the development of the remote data
terminal to complete the package.
While our project is focused on the needs of the ocean research and
monitoring community, we want to involve other communities and build a
larger user base in order to keep operational, airtime, and equipment
costs down.
Iridium has full coverage in the polar regions. We expect an effective
bandwidth of 10 kilobits/sec, a 2-way link, and no latency. We believe
that the proposed system will be of interest to the arctic research and
monitoring community.
We are conducting an initial survey to identify individuals or projects
working in the Arctic who are telemetering data, or plan to telemeter
data, or would telemeter data if there were a cost-effective way to do
it. We are interested in finding out:
- Number of sites/platforms
- Volume of data per site/platform per day/week/year/whatever
- Mission duration
- Size, weight, power restrictions
- The carrier you are using and costs
We are, of course, always interested in more detail: what parameters you
measure, scientific goals, etc. But the list above covers the basic
numbers we need.
