General description of the position:
The incumbent of this position serves as a Fishery Biologist and is
responsible for the development and implementation of resources
management programs dealing with the preservation and protection of
aquatic and fishery resources of significance to the nearly 5-million
acre area comprising Katmai National Park and Preserve, Aniakchak
National Monument and Preserve, and the Alagnak Wild River. Also
provides technical assistance and review of fisheries projects of
significance to Lake Clark National Park and Preserve. Major duties
include designing, developing, testing, and implementing scientific
protocols for the long-term monitoring of fish populations with a key
emphasis on ecological investigations of Alaskan salmon and trout
inhabiting park waters. Conducts inventories to determine species
distributions, composition, and relative abundances; age-and-growth
characteristics; catch and harvest in recreational, commercial, and/or
subsistence fisheries; and overall patterns of angler use and
distribution. Also designs, supervises, surveys, and reports upon the
water resources monitoring program, including water quality, chemistry,
hydrology, bathymetry, hydrography, nutrient, and contaminant analyses.
Works cooperatively and coordinates closely with other agencies, native
groups, and organizations to obtain and provide technical information
and otherwise represent park fishery management positions. The incumbent
will be expected to travel to the park units and remote villages.
The position will be located in King Salmon, Alaska, a small (~500
residents) town in a community that totals around 1300 year-round
residents. Access is by air only.
