THE 17TH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON
OKHOTSK SEA & SEA ICE

24-28 FEBRUARY 2002

MOMBETSU, HOKKAIDO, JAPAN

Organized by:
The Okhotsk Sea & Cold Ocean Research Association (OSCORA)
Institute of Low Temperature Science, Hokkaido University
Northern Regions Center
City of Mombetsu

INVITATION

We invite you to participate in the 17th International Symposium on
Okhotsk Sea & Sea Ice (MOMBETSU-02 SYMPOSIUM) to be held in Mombetsu,
Hokkaido, Japan on 24-28 February 2002.

The annual international Okhotsk Sea & Sea Ice Symposium being organized
by the Okhotsk Sea & Cold Ocean Research Association (OSCORA) is
intended for all scientists and engineers interested in issues related
to sea ice, the Okhotsk Sea and ice-covered waters. The MOMBETSU-02
SYMPOSIUM will especially address the new results from research programs
being carried out in the Okhotsk Sea, seasonally ice-covered waters,
arctic/subarctic waters, and oil spill problems in the marine
environment in ice-covered waters. The program will also include
Professor Masaaki Aota's lecture on the occasion of his retirement from
Hokkaido University at the end of March 2002 after 37 years studies on
sea ice and oceanography. Professor Aota has been the Chair of the
OSCORA since the 16th Okhotsk Sea & Sea Ice Symposium in 2001. In
addition, special sessions or workshops are also welcome to be jointly
organized with MOMBETSU-02 SYMPOSIUM. Please contact the program chair
if you have suggestions or recommendations for special sessions. All
sessions will consist of oral presentations. Poster space will be
available for those who may not be able to attend but would like to
present poster papers during the symposium.

Technical tours during the symposium will be arranged on the icebreaker,
"Garinko II" for a sightseeing tour in the ice-covered Mombetsu harbor
area, to the Okhotsk Tower to visit an aquarium under the ice, and to
the Okhotsk Sea Ice Museum of Hokkaido. A one-day, post-symposium
excursion is planned to a hot spring.

THE VENUE

The city of Mombetsu is a small and pleasant fishing town
located along the Okhotsk Sea coast. It is accessible by air
transportation from Sapporo/Okadama and also directly from Tokyo/Haneda
airports. Please arrange your flight schedule with your local travel
agents or the All Nippon Airways (ANA) and/or Air Nippon (ANK) offices.

The beginning of the sea-ice season in Mombetsu varies from early
January to mid-February. The Symposium will be held in the middle of the
ice season. We look forward to sharing this unique opportunity with you
in February 2002 in addition to lively discussions on sea ice.
