NEW COMMISSIONERS

On 9 October 2001, the President appointed two new members to the U.S.
Arctic Research Commission. Mead Treadwell of Anchorage, Alaska, is
Managing Director of the Institute of the North and works closely with
Governor Walter Hickel and the Northern Forum. Mead served as Deputy
Commissioner of the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation from
1990 to 1994. Mead replaces Walter Parker of Anchorage, Alaska, in one
of the Commission's research seats. Mary Jane Fate of Fairbanks, Alaska,
stepped down as a member of the University of Alaska's Board of Regents
in June of this year and has been associated with the University for
many years. She is also a member of the Board of Baan O Yeel Kon
Corporation, the Rampart Village Native corporation. She replaces
Richard Glenn of Barrow, Alaska, in the seat designated for a
representative from the Native people of Alaska.

DEPUTY EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S POSITION FILLED

Dr. Lawson W. Brigham joined the Commission in September as Deputy
Executive Director. After a long career in the U.S. Coast Guard during
which he covered the extremes of latitude reachable at sea by visiting
both the Farthest South in the Ross Sea and the North Pole, Lawson
retired to the Scott Polar Research Institute at Cambridge University
where he received his doctorate. Lawson is working full-time in the

NEW SECRETARY

Ms. Robin Ross has joined the Commission as a part-time secretary. Robin
was previously in the State Department Medical Office where she
supervised medical services for overseas employees of the State
Department. Robin will be working from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM (Eastern
Time) in the Commission's Washington Office. Her e-mail address is:
