Reports from the fall 2001 online workshops for the Human Dimensions
of the Arctic System initiative of the National Science Foundation
are now available for download at http://www.arcus.org/harc/index.html.
The three one-week workshops were:
Arctic Weather: Implications of changing weather patterns in the
Arctic
Northern Treeline: The location of the arctic treeline and its
implications for humans
Sea Ice: Effects of sea ice changes on coastal communities
The Human Dimensions of the Arctic System initiative of the National
Science Foundation sponsored three online workshops to discuss HARC-
related research topics. The HARC science management office facilitated
one-week long moderated discussions of these three topics: Arctic
Weather, Northern Treeline, and Sea Ice.
All of the workshop discussions are available online at
http://arcus.zeroforum.com and more information about each workshop, the
participants lists, moderator biographies, background information, daily
summaries from the discussion, and additional information about the HARC
research initiative are available from the HARC web site at
http://www.arcus.org/harc/index.html.
The workshop reports are available as PDF downloads and will not be
published in hard copy. Each report is a four-page document outlining
the research needs identified during the workshop discussions. The
reports do not summarize the discussions, which are available online in
the Forum or as daily summaries on the web site, but rather summarize
the outcomes of the discussion. The reports are intended as resources
for investigators to use in developing proposals to the HARC initiative.
No more online workshops are planned at this time, though the HARC SMO
hopes to facilitate more in the future. Please send questions, comments,
