TO: All U.S. Participants in IASC

FROM: Chris Elfring, Director, Polar Research Board

RE: IASC-related Travel Support Available

The Polar Research Board, which serves as the U.S. National
Committee to the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC),
is pleased to announce that we have some funds from the National
Science Foundation that are targeted to support the travel of
U.S. scientists wishing to participate in IASC activities. Travel
could be to the annual IASC meeting, to be held during Arctic
Science Summit Week (21-27 April 2002) in Groningen, the
Netherlands, or to any working group meeting at other times during
the year. Information about Arctic Science Summit Week is available
on the IASC web site at: http://www.iasc.no/. We hope that such
funding will encourage more U.S. participation and leadership
within the organization, and thus give the U.S. a more effective
voice in planning and conducting IASC activities. This opportunity
is open to any U.S. resident active in arctic research.

HOW TO APPLY
To apply for travel funds for Arctic Science Summit Week, please
respond asap, but not later than: 27 March 2002.

For workshops of IASC groups or other IASC-related activities,
applications are welcome at any time but should arrive at least
one month before the event.

To apply for travel funds of up to $1500, please submit the
following information to the Polar Research Board (via Ann Carlisle,
Phone: 202/334-3479, Fax: 202/334-1477, email: acarlisl [at] nas.edu):

  1. Name
  2. Affiliation
  3. Full contact information (complete address including street address,
city, state, postal code; phone, fax, and email)
  4. Short letter (1-2 pages) describing the meeting you wish to attend,
including the name and purpose of the meeting, dates, name of working
group (if relevant), and your role in the meeting or group
  5. Amount requested (but not more than $1500)

The Polar Research Board will make its first-round decisions regarding
funding by the first week in April, so you can plan travel accordingly.
Applications received after the deadline will be considered only if
funds remain in the pool after the initial round of commitments. Funds
will be disbursed as travel advances prior to your trip. All applicants
must supply their social security number for tax purposes. All travel
must be on U.S. carriers (when possible) and comply with normal
government travel regulations.

If you have any questions about IASC activities, please contact the U.S.
