A new report, "Arctic Research Support and Logistics: Strategies and
Recommendations for System-scale Studies in a Changing Environment", is
now available. This document updates Logistics Recommendations for an
Improved U.S. Arctic Research Capability, published in 1997.

The National Science Foundation sponsored ARCUS to produce this update,
which summarizes the progress made in improving research support since
1997 and responds to changing needs for arctic logistics and research
support since the earlier report was published. The recommendations were
developed by the members of the Research Support and Logistics Working
Group, co-chaired by Peter Schlosser of Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory
and Terry Tucker of Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory.

Members of the working group represented and gathered information from
the broader arctic research community, which also articulated its
research support needs directly, through survey responses, discussions
at meetings and workshops, and comments on a previous draft of this
report.

The working group thanks all those who contributed to this process. The
working group intends this report to be used by all federal agencies
with interests in the Arctic, as well as by Congress, in helping to
develop and improve arctic research support. As a living document, the
report will require future updates as research priorities change and
logistics and research support assets continue to improve.
