BACKGROUND
Radioactive contamination of the environment is a problem with potential
implications for ecology and society. Arctic Radioactive Contamination
(ARC) is a 3-year research project funded by the Research Council of
Norway. It is coordinated by the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing
Center (NERSC), with the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme
(AMAP) and Risoe National Laboratory as partners.

ARC aims to quantify the temporal-spatial distribution of man-made
radionuclides originating from atmospheric fallout from past atmospheric
nuclear weapon testing. Quantification will be conducted for:
(1) Chernobyl reactor accident in 1986
(2) Nuclear fuel reprocessing plants in Sellafield, Dounrey, and La Hague
(3) The Russian rivers Ob and Yenisey

The applied methodology will be to bridge observations with
state-of-the-art numerical ocean modelling to address the transport and
mixing of the most common radionuclides in the Atlantic-Arctic Oceans
for the period 1950 to present.

All results of the performed hind-cast simulations will be published and
will be made openly and easily available on a public web-page.
Furthermore, model experiments will be performed with climate scenarios
for the 21st century to assess potential changes in the transport and
mixing of the radionuclides as a result of global warming.

POSITION SPECIFICS
The successful PhD candidate will work at the GC Rieber Climate
Institute at NERSC, and will be mainly involved in conducting and
analyzing the ocean modelling experiments in ARC.

ELIGIBILITY
Applicants should have a civil engineering education, MS or equivalent,
with relevant professional background in oceanography, mathematics,
physics, or informatics. Women are encouraged to apply. The PhD
scholarship is remunerated at wage level 37, approximately 40,000 USD
per year.
