Applications are invited for a PhD research position focusing on
geochemistry to work with the Geosciences Department at Alfred Wegener
Institute starting 1 June 2004. The topic is permafrost dynamics.
OVERVIEW
The successful candidate will concentrate on the study of a permafrost
drilling transect in the coastal region of the Laptev Sea (Siberian
Arctic). Based on geochemical analyses of cored permafrost sequences and
ground-ice, the transition from terrestrial to submarine permafrost
under the influence of sea-water is to be characterized.
The studies are associated with the project "Dynamics of Permafrost in
the Laptev Sea," which is funded by the German Ministry for Education
and Research, and with the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC)
and International Permafrost Association (IPA) project "Arctic Coastal
Dynamics (ACD)."
QUALIFICATIONS
The candidate should have an MSc or equivalent degree in
geology/geochemistry with profound practical skills in analytical
geochemistry. Experience in the fields of permafrost or geocryolgy is a
benefit but not mandatory. The willingness to participate in Arctic
expeditions is preconditioned.
POSITION SPECIFICS
The position is funded for a period of 3 years. The salary is based on
the German Civil Service remuneration system.
