Dear Colleagues:

Enthusiasm continues to build for the International Polar Year
2007-2008. The March 5 edition of Science, available online at
http://www.sciencemag.org/content/current/, has an editorial and news
story about some ideas that have been discussed so far.

The ICSU IPY Planning Group, established to coordinate international
efforts, is still open to ideas to help define the vision for IPY. The
group is meeting in early April and thus has set Monday, 15 March 2004
as the next deadline for submission of IPY ideas. If you have an idea
that would be a great international effort for the International Polar
Year, but have not yet submitted it to ICSU, please send your one to two
page submissions now to:
jcel [at] bas.ac.uk

with a copy to:
IPYINPUT [at] nas.edu

At this stage, the goal of these submissions is to help the ICSU IPY
Planning Group identify the range of possible international interests
and possible themes. This information is important to the planning
process and there will be other calls for input. Please note this is not
a call for research proposals: here in the United States and also
internationally, we envision that opportunities for US investigators
will be openly announced and subject to the normal peer review
competition through participating funding agencies. At this point
planners are still defining the context and goals and so it is best to
keep your submissions concise.
Regards,

Mary Albert, Chair, U.S. National Committee for the IPY
