OVERVIEW
The Cook Inlet Historical Society presents a seminar on exploration of
the North and South Poles at the dawn of the 20th Century. David Bisno,
M.D. will lead the group through the week. Presented in conjunction with
the exhibit "Endurance: Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition" at
the Anchorage Museum of History and Art (15 February 2004 - 16 May
2004), the fiercely nationalistic age of exploration will be examined
through the adventures and exploits of Robert Scott, Roald Amundsen,
Frederick Cook, Robert Peary, Fridtjof Nansen, Ernest Shackleton,
Vilhjalmur Stefansson, and Richard Byrd.

REQUIRED READING
Prior to the first meeting it is required that participants read Roland
Huntford's "The Last Place on Earth" (available at the Anchorage Museum
of History and Art) and any book on Ernest Shackleton. Seminar
participants will discuss and compare inspirational and implacable men
with unrelenting wills to reach intangible and impossible goals. Full
participation in active discussion is expected.
