The Department of Sami Ethnography at Tromso University Museum invites applications for a three year post-doctoral fellowship in Sami culture and social sciences.

The main objective of post-doctoral fellowships at Norwegian colleges and universities is to enable appointees to qualify for professorships. Applicants will need to submit a project proposal for the fellowship period. The applicant must be able to complete the project during the period of employment and a time schedule should be included.

DEPARTMENT INFORMATION The activities of the Department of Sami Ethnography are carried out using both synchronic and diachronic approaches. As befits a museum, field work is a central part of the department's academic and research activities. The Department of Sami Ethnography conducts research, collection-building and documentation, conservation, public relations, and teaching - all primarily within the area of Sami culture. Since the cultural and ethno-political activities of the Sami people are increasingly characterized by fellowship with other indigenous peoples, the department's research, documentation, publications, and teaching also cover this area. Indigenous peoples of the sub-arctic region are given particular attention. The department is at present involved in developing new ways of communicating its research.

FELLOWSHIP SPECIFICS The project should fall within the research activities of the department and should strengthen the department's competence in comparative social science and cultural research from an academic base in either the humanities or the social sciences. Projects dealing with resource management or questions of human rights among indigenous people of the north will be of particular interest. The fellow will devote her/his time entirely to research, research-related activities, and research administration.

Applicants must have a doctorate and document research competence in comparative culture and social science analysis. The successful applicant should also have a knowledge of Sami culture and society and indigenous people's issues in general. A knowledge of the Sami language will be an advantage.

APPLICATION DETAILS The University of Tromso wishes to recruit women to research positions. If two or more applicants are found to have approximately equal qualifications, the University will rank women before men.

To apply, please include the following:
(1) CV
(2) Certified copies of diplomas and certificates
(3) List of academic work with information of where it has been published (five copies)
(4) Copies of academic work - Applicants can submit up to 10 works that they consider central in their production. The doctoral dissertation is counted as one work. Applicants should submit 3 copies (arranged in 3 complete sets) of these works. One copy of all other academic work should also be included. Applicants should include a description of their written work which specifies which publications/samples they consider most important and which should, therefore, be given particular weight in the evaluation.
