OVERVIEW
From Denali to Mt. Everest, from the Grand Canyon to the Alps,
mountaineering legend Bradford Washburn has explored, climbed, mapped,
and photographed some of the most beautiful and challenging landscapes
on Earth.

Through his breathtaking photographs, groundbreaking maps, and popular
books and articles, many for the National Geographic Society, Washburn
has provided a means by which mountaineers - as well as armchair
adventurers - have been able to scale rugged peaks and explore distant
lands. Now, with the publication of Michael Sfraga's new biography,
readers will discover the many sides and talents of Bradford Washburn -
mountaineer, photographer, scientist, explorer, cartographer, and
educator.

This engaging biography recounts Washburn's life-long pursuits of
exploring, documenting, and describing the unexplored. An authority on
Alaska's mountains and glaciers, Washburn, who turned 94 on June 7, was
the first person to scale Mount McKinley three times, complete the first
aerial photographic survey of the mountain, and produce the
authoritative map of the peak.

Sfraga describes Washburn's contributions to scientific exploration and
geographic discovery, and shows how at the very core of each of
Washburn's expeditions can be found a few primary motifs: "a fundamental
love for high and distant places, a yearning to discover the unknown,
and the desire to share with others the world's natural beauty and
scientific wonders."
