Even though both women and Indigenous peoples are involved in fisheries,
they are often poorly represented in the relevant literature. This
volume will investigate how gender and culture impact fisheries across
the circumpolar North. The aim of the book is to document and analyze
women's and men's roles in Arctic fisheries in order to recognize,
promote, and support equal participation in this sector.

International in scope, "Gender, Culture and Northern Fisheries" will
establish a knowledge base that can be used for promoting gender
equality in the marine sector throughout the Arctic region. It will
develop tools and strategies that can be used to encourage participatory
values and practices and promote international cooperation.

Tentative Section headings (approximately 4 chapters per section)
1. Traditional rights to land and natural resources
2. Governance practices
3. Access to, and involvement in, economic initiatives
4. Emerging issues - The impact of climate change, contaminants, etc.

Scholars, governmental representatives, and community members interested
in contributing to this upcoming volume are invited to submit an
Expression of Interest to the editor by 15 September 2004. The
Expression of Interest (1-2 pages) should indicate which section of the
book you would like to contribute to, what your chapter will be about,
how your chapter addresses the issue of gender, culture and northern
fisheries, and your related experience with the topic. Those potential
contributors whose Expressions of Interest have been accepted by the
editorial committee will be invited to submit a draft chapter by 15
November 2004.
