The Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Studies (VPRGS) is a senior
level, 12-month position that reports to the Provost within the Office
of Academic Affairs. The vice provost is the chief executive providing
leadership and administrative support to research, sponsored programs,
and graduate studies. This position oversees the Office of Sponsored
Programs which is responsible for pre-award central administration of
sponsored activities throughout UAA including extended campuses. The
office of the VPRGS provides coordination with other major academic
units of the University of Alaska System and with the Statewide
Administration on matters of research, sponsored programs, and federal
initiatives. The office also provides analysis of institutional data on
sponsored programs activities and provides communications to various
internal and external audiences with respect to UAA's research and
sponsored activities. Issues of research integrity including the ethical
conduct of research, involvement of human or animal subjects, use of
chemicals or radioisotopes, and research involving certain biological
materials are generally subject to the oversight of various committees
and are considered within the administrative functions of the office of
the VPRGS. The VPRGS chairs the Council on Scientific Research, and with
that body provides advice and leadership within the institution on
issues pertaining to institutional research focus areas. The VPRGS
serves an advocacy role for research and researchers within the
institution. The VPRGS also provides administration in support of UAA's
graduate programs, and will be responsible for providing leadership in
the development of new graduate programs and institutional
administrative structures in support of graduate education. UAA
currently has some 30 masters degree programs offered through its five
colleges and the School of Engineering. Development of a Graduate School
is currently under consideration through the Office of the Vice Provost
for Research and Graduate Studies.

QUALIFICATIONS
Requirements for this position include an earned doctorate, substantial
experience with grants and contracts, evidence of an understanding of
issues of faculty research and scholarship, experience managing
personnel and budgets, and demonstrated successful leadership experience
including communication skills, vision, and integrity. Additional
attributes to support appointment at a senior faculty rank in a
discipline offered by UAA include experience with NSF and/or NIH grants,
faculty experience at an educational institution, administrative
experience, a record of past research or scholarly accomplishments,
experience mentoring graduate students, experience with graduate
curricula, and a demonstrated record of commitment to diversity.
