The Svalbard Research Experience for Undergraduates Project is offering
exciting opportunities for students to participate in polar science
research on the arctic island of Svalbard, Norway. Participants will
calibrate the record of Holocene climate change contained in glacial-fed
Lake Linne by studying the modern glacial, fluvial, and lacustrine
systems.

Motivated junior-year students are sought to develop their own research
project addressing current and past climate change in the Arctic.
Students will formulate their own research questions and carry-out the
associated field work during a five week field program on Svalbard.
Students will complete their projects at their home institution during
the following academic year. The program will run from approximately 15
July to 21 August 2005.

Students from under-represented minority groups are particularly
encouraged to apply. Students selected for the Svalbard REU Project will
have all of their expenses paid (airfare, room/board, and research
costs) and will receive a summer stipend. The Svalbard REU is supported
by Arctic Natural Sciences and the Paleoclimate program, Atmospheric
Sciences Division of NSF. The National Science Foundation requires
participating students to be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
