PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Ph.D. project is part of a larger international research program
with the overarching objective to investigate whether large-scale
climate warming is causing release of old carbon from thawing permafrost
in the huge pan-Arctic tundra and taiga. The doctoral student would be
introduced to state-of-the-art analytical techniques to perform 14C
dating of specific biomarker compounds released from the land vegetation
and washed out with rivers and creeks. Field studies would be focused on
the large Russian-Siberian Arctic Rivers as well as a seasonal study at
Stordalen mire near the Abisko Research Station in northern Sweden.

HOST INSTITUTION
The Department of Applied Environmental Science (ITM), Stockholm
University, conducts research and education in broad areas of the earth
and environmental sciences (http://www.itm.su.se). The department has
currently about 110 employees. ITM offers an excellent environment for
graduate training in environmental research. The wide spectrum of
scientific expertise ranging from atmospheric science through
environmental chemistry and biogeochemistry to ecotoxicology builds the
fertile basis for a thriving culture of interdisciplinary exchange and
cooperation. Outstanding analytical capabilities, extensive laboratory
and experimental facilities, and modern mathematical modelling tools
provide the methodological prerequisites for working at the cutting edge
of environmental research. With our large staff of experienced
scientists, we offer close personal supervision and a wealth of
experience to our students. Our extensive network of national and
international collaborators opens doors to other perspectives and
opportunities.
