The Prince William Sound Science Center (PWSSC) and the Ecotrust Copper
River Program seek applicants for the position of Geographic Information
System (GIS) Analyst, located in Cordova, Alaska.

The GIS Analyst will further develop the Copper River Knowledge System,
which focuses on salmon, their habitat, habitat management, fisheries,
community economies, research and monitoring, and resource development
in the Copper River region. The effort encompasses the collection,
collation, and integration of data to make publicly accessible the best
available information for increasing effectiveness of salmon
conservation projects, policy reform, and sustainable management.

The GIS Analyst will work through a partnership of the Prince William
Sound Science Center (the Center) and Ecotrust. In the first year of a
three-year plan, the GIS Analyst will focus on the Copper River region
while beginning plans to expand the Knowledge System to also encompass
the Prince William Sound region. The GIS analyst will be responsible to
develop new avenues to acquire information and data, synthesize
information, identify data gaps, integrate historic data, and work with
tribal communities to incorporate Traditional Ecological Knowledge. The
goal is to create innovative ways to display complicated information on
salmon, communities and other regional resources.

The GIS analyst will work closely with Alaska-based Ecotrust staff and,
periodically, also with Ecotrust GIS support staff based in Portland,
Oregon. During the first year, the GIS analyst's office will be housed
in Ecotrust's Cordova office and in subsequent years, space permitting,
the GIS analyst's office will move to the Center.

This position requires an ability to see connections and opportunities
between ecosystem information sources and regional management issues.
The GIS analyst must be a self-starter and able to work independently.
Specific responsibilities will include:
- Creation of an integrated and accessible knowledge system that
graphically displays complicated information on renewable and
non-renewable resources, communities, and economies.
- Focused research using library, internet, and contact sources.
- Collation, organization, and analysis of data on the status of salmon.
- Coordination in data transfer and processing with agencies and
researchers.
- Pursuit of a wide variety of collateral information as tasked.
- Writing and synthesis in a team setting.
- Documentation and verification of sources and metadata.
- Coordination of efforts with the University system, state and federal
agencies, tribal and local governments, and the Alaska Ocean Observing
System

The ideal candidate will have at least three years of experience in GIS
systems and analysis, cartography, and project development. A degree in
GIS, biology or natural resources is necessary, an advanced degree is an
advantage. The candidate will have excellent and enthusiastic research
skills, friendly and fearless telephone interview abilities, recognize
the value(s) of information, types, and relevance to task, and have the
ability to focus on completion and meet firm deadlines. The candidate
will have a desire to contribute to the development of a comprehensive
regional knowledge system that will have the capacity to grow and
integrate similar data synthesis and display efforts underway in Prince
William Sound and the Gulf of Alaska.

NOTE that the candidate must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or be
a Canadian or Mexican citizen eligible for a TN visa.

Specific desired skills include:
- Clearly demonstrated breadth and strength of skills in GIS
technology, programming and interactive mapping applications including
expertise in workstation ARC/INFO, ArcGIS 9.x, ArcView 3.x and 9.x,
ERDAS Imagine and other related software applications.
- Demonstrated skills in project management and team leadership.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously.
- Demonstrated ability to teach GIS skills and techniques to others.
- Desire and ability to maintain and build strong technical capacity
within GIS team.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate with staff and clients, alike.
- Exposure to ArcSDE and/or familiarity with the geodatabase model.
- Track record with presenting and/or publishing results of GIS analysis.
