Bergen NorwayBioJohnny A. Johannessen has 35 years experience in satellite remote sensing in oceanography and sea ice research. In particular, he has focused on the use of satellite remote sensing to advance the understanding of mesoscale processes and air-sea-ice interaction along the marginal ice zone and associated with ocean fronts and eddies. In the last 15 years he has also been involved in development and implementation of operational oceanography both at national and international level. This has included a central involvement in the development and implementation of the European Marine Service under the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES, since 2013 renamed to Copernicus) initiative. Today the operation of the Arctic Modelling and Forecasting component of the Copernicus resides jointly between the Nansen Center and the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET.NO). Johannessen has authored/co-authored more than 200 scientific and technical publications, reports and book articles of which 88 papers are published (or in revision/press) in International Peer Review Journals and 22 are published in peer review book articles.
