He is a former research geophysicist for the US Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory and has continued to stay active in the field as a private consultant. His research has ranged from small-scale physical properties of individual ice cores to large-scale thickness variability across the Arctic basin. He has participated in many field expeditions over his career. He has pursued investigations of regional and temporal variability of ice thickness using submarine acquired ice draft profiles. He has been instrumental in processing and declassifying U.S. Navy submarine ice draft data and promoting its release to NSIDC.
