The Institute for Harnessing Data and Model Revolution in Polar Regions (iHARP) invites proposals for the Synergy Incentives Program (iHARP-SIP). iHARP-SIP is designed to bring interdisciplinary teams working together to strengthen links to the Harnessing the Data Revolution (HDR) ecosystem towards identifying collaboration opportunities and leveraging distinct strengths via cross-institute coordination, communication, and new research seeding.

iHARP welcomes proposals from researchers who will lead SIP to foster collaboration of iHARP researchers, fellows, and scholars, deepening common research directions.

The SIP project team will:

  • Develop and implement the project in collaboration with other iHARP members;
  • Form a collaborative enterprise between academic researchers, fellows (students), and community members;
  • Foster cross-cutting contributions to either polar science or data science to increase awareness across disciplines;
  • Foster additional researchers entering this field and nurture new researchers via student fellowship and other engagement programs;
  • Advance the mission of iHARP by extending to the sub-disciplines of the polar science domain (i.e. sea ice, ice dynamics, atmospheric dynamics, hydrology, etc.) to address impactful and interconnected modeling of the ice dynamics and reduce the uncertainty in the prediction of sea level rise;
  • Engage new datasets and experts to help navigate the data and understand the science questions;
  • Utilize additional polar data repositories from the National Snow and Ice Data Center, NSF Arctic Data Center, NSF Polar Geospatial Center, and others;
  • Help connect research activities with the HDR institutes;
  • Help engage with advisory boards of various HDR institutes, Pan-HDR Ice-Melt Community Council (PHICC), and other community organizations; and
  • Foster connection between data repositories and partner organizations.

The SIP award will be a one-time award for one-year duration, with funding not exceeding $15,000 (excluding overhead) for the course of the project. The committee will select up to two iHARP-SIPs for 2024-2025.

iHARP is funded through the NSF HDR program and advances our understanding of the response of polar regions to climate change and its global impacts.
