The School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Sustainability at
Northern Arizona University seeks a PhD student with a background in
earth sciences. The position will be based in Flagstaff, Arizona.

The successful applicant will join a new NSF-funded project focusing on
glacial-lacustrine sedimentation to investigate past and future climate
change. The position will study the major processes that govern
sedimentation in Arctic lakes in glaciated catchments. New glacier,
hydrology, limnology, and sediment modern-process studies will provide
the input data to calibrate and test process-based earth system models.
The student will be involved in Arctic fieldwork, where s/he will gain a
more comprehensive understanding of how glaciers, hydrology, and lakes
relate to the Arctic system.

The Institute of Earth Sciences at the University of Iceland seeks a PhD
candidate in glaciology. The position will be based in Reykjavik,
Iceland.

The successful applicant will be part of the project SAMAR: "Short and
long term ablation modeling based on Automatic Weather Station data and
Regional Climate Model." This project is a close collaboration between
University of Iceland, and the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI).

Candidates should have completed studies at Master's level in natural
sciences or related disciplines (geophysics/earth science, physics,
mathematics, computer sciences, engineering). Experience in computer
programming (matlab, fortran, C/C++), time series analysis, meteorology,
or glaciology is desirable.

  1. Northern Arizona University seeks Postdoctoral Researcher
    Permafrost Carbon

The Center for Ecosystem Science and Society at Northern Arizona
University seeks a postdoctoral research fellow. The position will be
based out of Flagstaff, Arizona.

The fellow will assist in a project focused on the fate of permafrost
carbon in a warming world. The research is field and lab based, with the
primary field location near Denali National Park and Preserve, Alaska.
The research foci are (1) net ecosystem carbon exchange and loss of old
C from a gradient of sites undergoing permafrost thaw, and similar
measurements in (2) a new experimental manipulation of permafrost thaw
and water table. Radiocarbon measurements of C pools and fluxes are an
important component of this project for determining the age of C losses
from ecosystems.

The postdoc will be primarily responsible for running the field
component of this project in particular focusing on operation and
interpretation of eddy covariance measurements. Other activities include
supervising personnel and interfacing with other team members,
interfacing with and/or making measurements of isotope fluxes, ecosystem
C exchange, vegetation aboveground productivity, and associated
environmental measurements. The postdoc will be expected to organize,
analyze, and maintain large data sets generated from a number of sensors
and gas exchange measurement systems, and participate in data analysis
and publications. There are also opportunities within the context of
this project to develop related research interests on climate change
effects in high latitude ecosystems.

Candidates with a background in biogeochemistry, ecosystem ecology,
plant ecology, soil science, forestry, hydrology, or isotopes are
encouraged to apply. Experience with LICOR eddy covariance equipment,
Campbell data loggers, SAS or R programming, or isotopes would be
helpful. The postdoc will generally spend a significant amount of time
during the spring-to-fall (May through September) field season in Alaska
running the field project, with winters spent in Flagstaff on lab and
data analysis. Experience with working and living in rugged field
conditions is required.

The University of Calgary seeks a graduate student with a back ground in
social and/or behavior sciences. The position will be based in Calgary,
Alberta, Canada.

The successful application will work on a project entitled "A
Meteorological Observatory in the Northwest Passage: Understanding Sea
Ice Changes and Inuit Use of Scientific Information." The student will
conduct research on how northern residents may make better use of
scientific information (including meteorological information) to manage
risks and make informed decisions about the use of sea ice for
traditional activities. The project will work in consultation with
residents in Cambridge Bay to install a meteorological station on a
small island in Dease Strait, a waterway heavily used by local residents
for travel, hunting, fishing, and leisure.

Applicants should meet the following requirements:
- Hold (or be nearing completion of) a Bachelor's degree in the
social and/or behavioural sciences related to geography,
environmental science, or a similar field.
- Have an entering GPA of at least 3.5 on the 4-point scale (or
equivalent).
- Have strong writing, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Preference will be given to applicants with a background and/or
interest in (a) the risk and decision sciences; (b) local and
traditional ecological knowledge, particularly in
northern/aboriginal contexts; (c) mixed research methods; and (d)
working in an interdisciplinary environment.

Award Details
- Funding is in place for a two-year MSc studentship valued at
$22,000 (CDN) per year.
- Applications from highly qualified students interested in a PhD
will also be considered.
- The preferred start date is spring 2015. However, other start
dates will be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates.
