The Faculty of Biosciences, Fishery, and Economics at the University of
Tromso (UiT) the Arctic University of Norway, seeks candidates for a PhD
position in plant ecology. The position is attached to the Department of
Arctic and Marine Biology (AMB) and the research group of Northern
Populations and Ecosystems. The appointment is for three years beginning
1 March 2015 and is based in Tromso, Norway.

The position is financed by The Norwegian Research Council, within the
project entitled "SnoEco: Effects of snow depth and snow melt timing on
Arctic plant ecology." The project will investigate the effect of
changes in snow depth in winter and snow melt timing in spring on plant
productivity and reproduction in the high-Arctic. A manipulative field
experiment will be carried out in Adventdalen, Svalbard to simulate
winter climatic change, responses at the soil and plant level will be
measured, and implications for various trophic levels will be drawn.

The candidate should ideally hold a Master's degree in plant ecology or
biology with plant ecological specialism (or equivalent), and have
experience with field observations and experiments. Working knowledge of
statistical methods and a proven ability for scientific writing are
required. The successful applicant should have the ability to carry out
fieldwork in adverse weather conditions, work independently, and
contribute to teamwork. Experience with Arctic ecosystems, insight into
nutrient cycling and trophic level interactions, and an interest in
learning new lab techniques are considered advantageous. The applicant
must have a good command of English, both written and verbal.

The Norwegian Polar Institute seeks candidates for a postdoctoral
research fellowship in Arctic marine algae and primary production. The
position is a fixed-term position for a period of two years with a
possible extension depending on funding and is based in Tromso, Norway.

The position is in the Norwegian Young Ice project (N-ICE 2015). The aim
of the project is to increase understanding of the role of both ice
algae and phytoplankton for Arctic marine ecosystems in a rapidly
changing environment. Potential research questions could address how
changing ice and light conditions, stratification, vertical mixing,
nutrient availability, or top-down control by grazers affect the timing,
duration, magnitude, and fate of ice-algal and phytoplankton blooms in
ice-covered waters in the Arctic Ocean. The results are to be published
in a timely fashion in international research journals.

N-ICE 2015 consists of a six-month ship-based expedition in the area
north of Svalbard, followed by a period of data processing, analysis,
and publication in peer-reviewed journals, at conferences, and in open
access databases. The successful candidate will be based on RV Lance in
the Arctic Ocean for one or more periods lasting up to six weeks.
Additional field- and cruise work may be anticipated. Necessary field
safety courses and instrument training will be given before departure.

Qualified candidates will have a relevant background in ice-algal and
phytoplankton ecology and physiology. Good knowledge of species
identification and ecology, biogeochemistry, primary production of ice
algae, and phytoplankton is desired. Field experience, especially at
high latitudes, or work in ice-covered areas, as well as laboratory
experience is desirable. Documentation of good statistical skills, the
ability to process large data sets and the capacity for acquiring
research funding are considered an asset. Publication of results is of
great importance and recent articles in high-rated peer-reviewed
scientific journals must demonstrate such ability.

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) seeks candidates for the post of
ocean/ice modeler. The position is full-time for a fixed-term of two and
one half years. It is based in Cambridge, United Kingdom.

The successful candidate will be be part of a team investigating
oceanographic variability in the Southern Ocean and the Arctic, and its
impacts on the Earth System. The group runs sophisticated idealized,
regional, and global oceanographic models (including sea ice and ice
shelf components) to simulate past conditions and predict how the ocean
will evolve in the future. Models are run on local and national
supercomputing facilities.

The position will be responsible for developing a new coupled model of
the interaction between oceans and ice sheets, based on existing models.
The goal of the project is to investigate the involvement of coupled
feedbacks in ice loss from the Antarctic Ice Sheet. The project is a
collaborative venture between BAS, the University of Edinburgh,
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the Alfred Wegener Institute.
