Overview

The Arctic Research Consortium of the U.S., Inc. (ARCUS) is a nonprofit consortium of research-related organizations and individuals dedicated to connecting Arctic research and education across the boundaries of discipline, institution, and geography through communication, coordination, and collaboration. With growing interest in the dramatic Arctic change taking place and its local and global effects, ARCUS seeks to expand and engage its community of members and participants.

ARCUS currently has 15 employees and approximately $2.5 million in annual revenues. It is primarily funded through grants and agreements with U.S. agencies and other research sponsors, with some revenue from member dues, donations, and sponsorships. ARCUS works in collaboration with numerous organizations in the U.S. and worldwide. ARCUS defines its community to include researchers, administrators, funders, educators, Indigenous organizations, Arctic residents, and other stakeholders.

This position manages membership recruitment, retention, and engagement activities; leads support for the Membership Committee; provides volunteer engagement and support; and facilitates connections between and among ARCUS members, activities, and the broader research and education communities.

The position reports directly to the Executive Director.

Required Qualifications

  • At least five years of experience working in association or scientific society membership management or a related field, with demonstrated impact in strengthening the organization.
  • A passion for supporting Arctic research and education.
  • Demonstrated independence, responsibility, and accountability in achieving results.
  • Proven ability to listen, connect with, inspire, and support members and volunteers.
  • Innovative and strategic thinking, and the demonstrated ability to experiment and create new approaches.
  • Working knowledge of technology and processes involved in being part of a geographically distributed team.
  • Excellent and proven interpersonal skills with experience leading and participating in diverse teams in a high-profile environment with tact and diplomacy and engaging with a wide range of internal and external contacts.
  • Attention to detail and strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience managing multiple simultaneous projects and deadlines.
  • Previous experience in leading ad hoc and volunteer groups on independent projects, including critical thinking and delegation of authority responsibilities.
  • College degree required, and advanced education or certification in a related field preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Arctic research, Arctic communities, and Arctic Indigenous Peoples preferred.

Responsibilities and Duties

  1. Oversee and implement a strategy to engage with individuals and organizations in the Arctic research and related community, introduce them to ARCUS, involve them in ARCUS activities, recruit them as members, partner with them as volunteers and leaders, and listen to their priorities for ARCUS activities and for the Arctic research and education enterprise as a whole.
  2. Lead efforts to communicate the ARCUS value proposition to members and prospective members.
  3. Oversee and implement membership recruitment, retention, and engagement activities.
  4. Lead preparation of the monthly ARCUS report to members and other communications with the member community.
  5. Lead the planning and facilitation of an annual member meeting and a member/prospective member reception.
  6. Lead recruitment of sponsors for an annual meeting, reception, and other community-building events. Support the financial development team in its work to attract other donors.
  7. Be familiar with the operations of other ARCUS programs and encourage wider participation in them among the community.
  8. Encourage the development of ARCUS champions beyond the board and staff.

Compensation, Hours, Location

This is a non-exempt, hourly half-time position. Salary range of $23,100 - $33,200, dependent on experience and qualifications. The benefits ARCUS offers to its part-time employees include enrollment in a retirement plan (403B) with a 5% employer contribution, workers' compensation insurance, unemployment insurance, paid time off, and holidays. Some travel is necessary, resulting in increased hours and associated overtime about twice per year.

We offer the flexibility to work convenient hours (subject to job responsibilities and communication needs), strong professional development opportunities, and a collegial and supportive team. This position is home-based as a part of the distributed ARCUS team. Location is flexible, though there is a slight preference for being located in an Arctic research hub.
