The Arctic has reached the end of the 2019 summer melt season. The September monthly averaged sea ice extent was 4.32 million square kilometers, based on the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) Sea Ice Index (SII). This is the third lowest in the satellite record that began in 1979. The median extent of the Outlook contributions for June (31 contributions), July (39 contributions), and August (42 contributions) were 4.40, 4.28, and 4.22 million square kilometers, respectively. Thank you to the groups that contributed to this 2019 July Sea Ice Outlook (SIO) report. We received 39 contributions that include pan-Arctic predictions, which is tied with the record number of contributions received for the Sea Ice Outlook. Combined with the contributions to the 2019 June SIO report, we have received a total of 70 contributions this season. We also received two new Antarctic contributions, for a total of 8 for June and July, and 10 additional Alaska contributions in July for a total of 19 so far.

Thank you to the groups that contributed to this 2019 June Sea Ice Outlook (SIO) report. We received 31 contributions that include pan-Arctic predictions; of those contributions, six also included pan-Antarctic predictions, and nine included predictions for Alaskan waters. This year, for the first time, there are also seven predictions for the Hudson Bay region.
